Former Vancouver man warns of genocide in Burundi
The country borders Rwanda, which is marking 20 years since its genocide

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - As the world remembers the genocide in Rwanda
twenty years ago, a former Vancouver pastor is drawing attention to
violence happening now in a neighbouring country.
"The past wounds, which had not healed yet, seem to be opening again,"
says the man who was able to get refugee status in Canada after
fleeing his homeland of Burundi ten years ago.
The pastor, who doesn't want us to use his name for fear of his
safety, has returned to Burundi, determined to support the people as
the situation deteriorates.
Tensions between Hutus and Tutsis, the same tribes involved in the
Rwandan genocide, have been mounting in advance of presidential
elections next year.
The current president, Pierre Nkurunziza, is finishing up his second
term, but wants to run for a third term, despite a two-term limit.
He's now calling for a referendum to let the people decide about an
extra term.
The pastor says while he's not an active opponent of the president,
it's well known how he feels about the present government.
"Not supporting the regime and being known as an opinion leader, a
person who has a group of followers, they know I don't support them.
When things turn bad, I can be in jeopardy."
Burundi is considered one of the poorest and most corrupt countries in
the world and it's no stranger to violence. As the world looked on
horrified by events in Rwanda, similar ethnic violence led to a
12-year civil war in Burundi, which took the lives of 300,000 people.
