The Democratic Green Party of Rwanda (DGPR) has threatened to drag the National Bank of Rwanda (BNR) to court for scrapping the French language from the country’s national currency.
The opposition political party claimed that French is a language officially used and recognised by the Constitution of Rwanda and any attempts to remove it from any national document should be done in accordance with the law.
The Constitution recognises Kinyarwanda, French and English as the three official languages in the country.
The opposition Green Party has for a long time opposed to the scrapping French from the national currencies. The party argued that Rwanda is traditionally Francophone.
The party has written to the central bank, appealing to the bank to stay the decision.
“We have written to the national bank informing them of our dissatisfaction and now that they have gone ahead to disregard the Constitution, we are taking them to the constitutional court,” said Frank Habineza, the president of green party.
The national bank of Rwanda last year printed new Rwf500 banknotes and the French language is among the features that were removed.
The proposed new Rwf2000 and Rwf5000 banknotes too are expected to be printed with French words.
“We are consulting our legal team and we have taken all necessary procedures and all is left is to present the case to court anytime from now,” added Mr Habineza.
All bids for the new banknotes were supposed to be accompanied by a bid security of Rwf13.7 million.
The government wants to print 10 million new banknotes of Rwf5000 and will see the front page bearing a mountain gorilla in the Volcanoes National Park.
