à LEXPRESS.FR Me
Jean-Claude Ndjakanyi

'Tintin' comics to remain in Amherst library children's room despite
parents' objections

By SCOTT MERZBACH
Staff Writer
Thursday, January 2, 2014
(Published in print: Friday, January 3, 2014)

AMHERST — A graphic novel series containing racial stereotypes that
some parents argue is inappropriate for pre-teens will not be removed
from the children's area at the Jones Library as a group has
requested.

But library officials are pledging to be part of a community dialogue
focused on racial issues and to better inform the public about the
children's room policies and how books are chosen.

The Jones Board of Trustees Thursday took no action on a request from
five parents asking that "Tintin" books be moved from a shelf at the
entrance to the children's area to either the young adult or the adult
section of the library. As a result, the 1930s-era series by Belgian
cartoonist Georges Remi, will stay where it is.

Library Director Sharon Sharry argued that relocating the books would
amount to censoring them, citing the American Library Association's
definition of censorship as a "change in the access status of
material, based on the content of the work and made by a governing
authority or its representatives." This can include changing the age
or grade levels that have access to the material.

"If the Jones Library does nothing else, we protect everyone's
constitutional right to read anything he or she wants," Sharry said.
"Our mission does not include censorship."

However, Andrew Grant-Thomas, one of the parents, said he was
"astonished" that the "Tintin" material has not received more scrutiny
from library staff members. He pointed to "Tintin in the Congo," a
story in which the black people of the Congo are presented as
monkey-like imbeciles who are easily manipulated. "Our argument is
fairly straightforward: These books are profoundly racist books," he
said.

Jeannette Wicks-Lim, another of the parents who submitted a memo as a
"request for reconsideration of library materials," said she
appreciates that the trustees conducted a nearly hour-long discussion
on the matter, but she, too, is surprised that library staff members
aren't doing more to examine books for inappropriate content.

"I'm somewhat dismayed that even blatantly racist material would not
be more carefully thought about," Wicks-Lim said.

Wicks-Lim, who is Asian-American, said that as a child she experienced
embarrassment and humiliation due to stereotypes learned by other
children, and didn't know how to respond. She said that youngsters
don't have the critical thinking skills necessary to deal with
inappropriate content.

Sharry, however, said she is concerned that moving the books would
open the door to other parents or patrons demanding changes to
materials that don't jibe with their religious or political beliefs.

"It is not the job of the librarian to tell the community what it
should or shouldn't be reading," Sharry said.

William Newman, the director of the western Massachusetts office of
the American Civil Liberties Union, said he commends the library
trustees for standing firm.

"These are crucial issues, but censorship is the absolutely wrong way
to go about addressing them," Newman said.

Ali Wicks-Lim, spouse of Jeannette Wicks-Lim, said children of color
are already experiencing a separation from their white peers, due to
the appeal the "Tintin" series.

She said she wants the children's room to be a safe place for all
children in the community. "Yet these books are right as you walk in,
right at eye level."

Ali Wicks-Lim said she understands concerns about censorship, but
thinks that moving the books or adding labels about their content
would be a middle ground.

But Sharry said it is the responsibility of parents and guardians to
know what their children are reading.

"The ultimate message is all parents need to walk into this building
and assume their children can't just run free," she said.

Library trustee Chris Hoffmann said American Library Association
guidelines state that age restrictions aren't appropriate to a
well-functioning library. "It's clear the library director has made
the right decision," he said.

Both trustees Michael Wolff and Jonathan McCabe said they are
sympathetic to the concerns of the parents.

As a member of the ACLU and NAACP, Wolff said that he is conflicted,
noting the treatment of the Congo by Belgium is a dark chapter in its
history.

McCabe said that as father of 4-year-old he has been surprised at some
of the material in the "Babar" series, but uses reading these books to
his child as a teaching opportunity.

Ali Wicks-Lim said she hopes to pull people together to discuss
parenting and race and may turn to the Human Rights Commission to help
work on such programming.

Sharry said she supports that.

"Let's have some programs to talk about racism in society," she said.
"The library is the perfect place for that."

[RwandaLibre] M23 Rebels Fuel Sexual Terrorism and Child Soldiers in Congo

M23 Rebels Fuel Sexual Terrorism and Child Soldiers in Congo

http://3bl.me/mgnadp via @SourceIntel
Saturday, January 4, 2014 - 10:15am

The United Nations is furious over recent reports of execution, child
soldiers and slavery, and sexual terrorism by the hands of the
Congolese army. The military is accused as corrupt, while breaching
human rights and fueling the civil war in the Congo. Although rebel
group M23 were recently defeated by the army in their attacks, they
are still actively and aggressively recruiting soldiers, many of whom
are children.

The UN's allegations are devastating in spite of the armed conflict of
guerrilla warfare that's become eminent in the Congo. The nation is in
dire need of military support and the evidence against its own
military is grave.

The ongoing terrorism in Africa has spiraled out of control due to the
sourcing of raw materials in the rich mining provinces of the Congo
and it's neighboring countries. The Democratic Republic of the Congo
and its surrounding Eastern Provinces are high risk areas of conflict
for the minerals. The raw materials are monopolized by armed guerrilla
groups who exploit masses of innocent civilians for mining labor
without wages. The raw materials have been coined as Conflict Minerals
similar in reference to Blood Diamonds and are otherwise known as 3TG
(Tantalum, Tungsten, Tin, and Gold).

Following the new year corporations will be pressured by U.S.
legislative act Dodd Frank Wall Street and Consumer Protection Act SEC
1502, regarding the mitigation and consumption of Conflict Minerals in
industry supply chains. The law will directly and indirectly impact
international corporations and partners of the U.S. The deadline for
final reporting and the execution of Due Diligence for publicly traded
U.S. companies is due May 31, 2014.

The implementation of Dodd-Frank will enforce supply chain
transparency and demand the Due Diligence of industries to enact Human
Rights. To see how to accomplish this request a free demo from Source
Intelligence.

AFP PHOTO/ALEXANDER JOE

[RwandaLibre] Leah Karegeya: "I always worried about his safety"

Leah Karegeya: "I always worried about his safety"

January 4 2014 at 12:15pm
By Sheree Bega
AP

Slain ex-spy scrapped SA security detail

Johannesburg - By the time the clock struck midnight on New Year's
Eve, Leah Karegeya knew something was wrong. There was no message from
her husband to welcome in 2014 and her increasingly frantic calls to
him remained unanswered.

"We skyped and talked every single day," said the US-based Leah of her
relationship with her husband, Colonel Patrick Karegeya, Rwanda's
former spy chief, who had been living in exile in South Africa since
2007.

"We skyped that morning. I told him I was going to have a meal with
our boys and he told me to drive safely and SMS him when we arrived."

He never replied. "It was unlike him. We started thinking something
was wrong. Then when there was no message from him on New Year's Eve,
I knew something bad had happened to him."

Hours later she would hear of the painful details of his murder in a
hotel room at the luxury Michelangelo Towers hotel in Sandton.

His killers reportedly spiked his drink with poison and, when that
failed, strangled him with a rope from a curtain in the hotel room.
But in some ways, Leah said, she had always braced herself for this
moment.

"It's a big shock but I always worried about his safety, that
something bad was going to happen.

"They tried several times… to end his life. They had been trying for
quite some time.

"But we always managed to escape. It's shocking but at the same time
it's expected… I'm just so sad at the way they killed him. I wish they
would have just shot him, not killed him so brutally," she said, her
voice quivering.

Karegeya was a key figure in the Rwandan opposition, and Leah believes
he was murdered by agents of Rwandan President Paul Kagame, his former
ally. Her turning point came when former Rwandan army chief and
friend, Lieutenant-General Faustin Kayumba Nyamwasa, another Rwandan
dissident, survived two assassination attempts in Joburg in June 2010.
"After that we were taken to safe houses… I had to leave my husband
alone in South Africa and take my children away from there."

She fled with the couple's three children to a small town in Tennessee.

"This is how the president (Kagame) works. He always has people
monitoring you. But I feel safe here. I didn't in South Africa. I
can't go anywhere else… I know it is him. This is what he does to
anyone who opposes his government. It is a terrible life we have to
live."

She and other Rwandan dissidents believe a man named Appollo Kiririsi
Gafaranga, a Rwandan businessman, is linked to the murder. Karegeya
was meeting Gafaranga at the hotel. "I saw him once. He was a friend
of my husband, a businessman from Rwanda. We knew him from working
with the government.

"He had known my husband for a long time. I think Rwanda was using
him, for my husband to think he was fine, but he was monitoring my
husband's movements and waiting for the right opportunity to murder
him," she said.

She wants to bury her husband in Uganda, his birthplace.

The couple were married for 25 years and she said she would miss his
laugh the most.

"He was a man of integrity. He fought for justice, he wanted people to
live in harmony, to have rights. They have taken his life but I am
grateful that he died for what he fought for. I'm glad people know
that about him," she said. - Saturday Star

“The price good men pay for indifference to public affairs is to be ruled by evil men.”
