Dian Fossey: The woman in the mist

Remembering the extraordinary life and tragic death of the renowned
gorilla watcher

The Rwandans called her Nyiramachabelli — "the woman who lives alone
on the mountain."

Indeed, zoologist Dian Fossey, who would have turned 82 today,
conducted her research without other humans nearby. But she was never
truly alone. Starting in 1966, Fossey took up residence with mountain
gorillas. They became her life's work.

A native of San Francisco, Fossey began her professional life as an
occupational therapist, but a 1963 trip to Africa and a meeting with
anthropologist Louis Leakey changed everything. Fossey subsequently
spent the next two decades studying primates, first in the Democratic
Republic of the Congo, and later in Rwanda. She is credited with
scoring the first recorded instance of peaceful gorilla-to-human
contact; a male gorilla named Peanuts touched her hand.

Fossey's favorite animal, a young male gorilla named Digit, was
beheaded by poachers in 1977, spurring Fossey to double down on her
research efforts and make even more vocal calls to the international
community to help save the primates from hunters. She published an
autobiography, Gorillas in the Mist, in 1983, which was later turned
into a successful movie starring Sigourney Weaver.

Fossey never saw the film. She was found dead on Dec. 26, 1985, alone
in her cabin, hacked to death by machetes. Her murder was never
solved, though authorities believe Fossey's assailants were likely the
same poachers she had rallied against.

JOHANNESBURG – Four Rwandan nationals, including a senior military
official will now be extradited to South Africa after they were
arrested in Mozambique in connection with the murder of former Rwandan
spy boss Patrick Karegeya. Karegeya was found dead in his hotel room
in Sandton on New Year's Day. Police say the four suspects were taken
into custody a week ago. Mozambique authorities say one of the
suspects linked to Karegeya's murder is a senior police official in
the Rwandan armed forces. Initial forensic investigations by local
police indicated that Karegeya may have been strangled. A blood
stained towel and curtain cord were apparently found in a safe in his
hotel room. The former director of the Rwandan external intelligence
service has been living in exile in this country for the past seven
years. Mozambique police say the suspects were detained following a
tip off from their South African counterparts. The government has
condemned the killing, saying those responsible should feel the full

The murder was committed on South African soil, therefore they should
be tried in SA. If they were sent back to Rwanda they would most
probably get a presidential pardon as the govt. has sanctioned the
assassination of so-called enemies of the ruling party

Rapporteur Maina Kiai will visit Rwanda from 20 to 27 January 2014 to
assess in depth to what extent the rights to freedom of peaceful
assembly and of association are enjoyed in the country.

Mr. Kiai's visit will be the first information-gathering mission to
Rwanda by an independent expert mandated by the UN Human Rights
Council to monitor and promote the realization of the rights to
freedom of peaceful assembly and of association worldwide.

"The rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and of association are
essential components of democracy, and States are called upon by the
Council to respect and fully protect the rights of all individuals to
assemble peacefully and associate freely," the independent expert
said.

"Government cooperation is absolutely essential to the effectiveness
of my mandate and every other Human Rights Council's mandate," the
Special Rapporteur noted.

Mr. Kiai is scheduled to travel to Kigali and Huye. During his
eight-day visit, he will meet with State officials, members of the
judiciary and of Parliament, as well as representatives of the
national human rights commission, the civil society, and the
diplomatic community.

The Special Rapporteur will share his preliminary findings and
recommendations at a press conference on Monday 27 January from 12.30
pm at the Golden Hills Hotel (Av. Ntaruka, No 6, Kiyovu, Kigali 1992).

Applicants need to fulfill all the criteria below in order to have a good chance of being selected as recipients of a residential scholarship.

Selection Criteria

Students should be from a developing or emerging country and intending to return on completion of their studies. A list of developing countries can be found in the document on the right hand side.

Preference will be given to postgraduate students.

Preference will be given to students that are studying a course that will provide skills to assist in the development of their home country.

Students must have a good proven academic record, with every prospect of success in their study and future careers.

Students must study at a publicly funded tertiary level educational institution in London.

Students must study in one of our member instituitions. Please contact your university to check that they will be taking up membership for the academic year for which you are applying.

Preference will be given to students who would otherwise be unable to study/finish their study for financial reasons.

Except in exceptional circumstances awards will be for one year only.

Students must have a tuition scholarship in place from their place of study, their Government or a recognised organisation.
