IN SUMMARY
While the country needs at least 3,500 midwives before 2017, the
National Association of Midwifery states that only 800 are officially
registered in the country.
Lack of enough professional midwives could frustrate the government's
efforts to reduce maternal mortality.
While the country needs at least 3,500 midwives before 2017, the
National Association of Midwifery states that only 800 are officially
registered in the country.
Countries in the world committed to reduce maternal mortality under
Millennium Development Goal five by next year.
According to World Health Organisation targets, two professional
midwives are needed to attend to a mother during delivery.
Josephine Murekezi, the chairperson of the Midwifery Association said
the country still has along way to go in addressing shortage of
midwives.
"There was no school of midwives before the genocide until in 1997
when the government resolved to put up the department at Kigali health
institute," she said adding that first batch of midwifery students
graduated in 1997.
Mrs Murekezi added that the government had to wait for 10 years to
establish six other health training schools to enrol more students.
"We are looking forward to educating professional teachers who in
return will train a big number of midwives, this will be done
alongside the establishment of more schools and colleges," Mrs
Murekezi added.
Major concern
According to her, shortage of midwives and nurses at some health
centres is a major concern, which needs urgent action to control
maternal mortality.
According to WHO reports, the country since 2007, has started to feel
the output of improved maternal health due to the reduction of
maternal mortality and child mortality.
Out of 100,000 expecting mothers, only 380 have reportedly died while
delivering unlike in the past where the maternal mortality rate was
between 1,000 and 2,000.
The government targets zero deaths of mothers during deliveries in few
years to come but insist more efforts needs to focus on education of
midwives trainers.
According to the Ministry of Health, at least 30 per cent of expecting
mothers mainly those in rural areas do not consult professional
midwives nor go to hospitals during labour.
The recent demographic health survey showed that almost seven in 10
births were assisted by a skilled health service provider, an
improvement since the previous survey, where only 39 per cent were
assisted by a midwife.
According to the report, 10 per cent were assisted by doctors, 59 per
cent by nurses or medical assistants while only 0.3 per cent by
midwives. At least 10 per cent of births, according to DHS received no
assistance during their deliveries.
The survey indicate that 21 per cent were assisted by untrained
persons with 2 per cent non-qualified health workers, 3 per cent
traditional birth attendants, and 16 per cent by relatives or other
persons.
