Rwandan national pride starts at street level

Kigali, Rwanda, April 13 - Umuganda means 'working together in common
purpose' and is meant to encourage a sense of national unity and pride
among Rwandans. And some of that pride can be seen quite literally at
street level. eNCA
KIGALI - It's been twenty years since the genocide in Rwanda in which
800,000 ethnic Tutsis were killed.
The country has since embarked on a determined recovery path,
registering impressive gains in areas like the economy, education and
health.
President Paul Kagame's government's also sought to encourage a sense
of national unity and pride among Rwandans, and some of that pride can
be seen quite literally at street level.
The country boasts now some of the cleanest streets on the continent.
In keeping with the Umuganda (working together in common purpose)
tradition, all Rwandans, including president Kagame, roll up their
sleeves once a month to do community service, mainly cleaning up their
neighbourhoods.
Participation in this community service is mandatory for all Rwandans
aged between 18 and 65. It's held on the last Saturday of every month,
with businesses shutting shop to allow workers to take part in the
campaign.
"If you don't go and sweep the street, normally they call it on the
last Saturday of every month. If you don't go there, you'll face it
during the night. You'll disappear," said Kennedy Gihana, a member of
the Rwandan National Congress.
But President Kagame maintains that the Umuganda campaign is about
building a country Rwandans can be proud of. -eNCA
