Alleged Rwandan terrorist indicted by federal grand jury

on August 6, 2015 - 8:51 PM
Peter Kalimu, 48, a native of the African country of Rwanda now living in Buffalo, was indicted by a federal grand jury here Thursday for allegedly being a former terrorist in that country, allegedly falsified his naturalization application to become a U.S. citizen and allegedly lied to officials of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security about his background.

U.S. Attorney William J. Hochul, Jr. said that if convicted he faces a prison term of up to 15 years, a fine of up to $250,000 and automatic revocation of his U.S. citizenship.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Anthony M. Bruce said the grand jury accused Kalimu of being a member of Rwanda's majority Hutu tribe named "Fidele Twizere" who allegedly took part in genocidal attacks on members of the minority Tutu tribe after the 1994 assassination of that country's Hutu president, Juvenal Habyarimana. In his naturalization petition Kalimu claimed he had never been known by any other name and repeated that allegedly false claim in a letter to Homeland Security officials last year.

Neither Kalimu nor his attorneys could be reached to comment Thursday night. Bruce said "Kalimu/Twizere" is scheduled to be arraigned before U.S. Magistrate Judge H. Kenneth Schroeder Jr. on the two-count indictment.
