TANZANIAN President Dr Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete has become the first head of state to receive an Honorary Doctorate in Laws from the University of Newcastle.

The fourth president of the United Republic of Tanzania said he would ''always cherish the moment'' as he accepted the certificate on Wednesday during his four-day Australian tour.

''I am proud to join the alumni family of this prestigious university... it has left an indelible mark on my mind and my personal history,'' Dr Kikwete said, at the presentation at Newcastle City Hall.

University of Newcastle chancellor Paul Jeans said he was delighted to present the degree to ''a highly decorated leader whose humanitarian, environmental and economic vision has impacted not just Tanzania but the whole of Africa''.

Dr Kikwete, who is near the end of his second and final term as president of the east African nation, thanked the university for its support and scholarship programs which have supported 45 Tanzanian students to complete higher education.

Three of the four Tanzanians completing University of Newcastle doctorate degrees watched their president receive the award.

''It's one moment I didn't ever expect,'' said Joshua Mhalila, a teacher at the Open University of Tanzania who is studying in education in Newcastle.

''I'm very excited to see my president receive an honorary award. It's something extraordinary for him,'' Mr Mhalila said.

During talks with Prime Minister Tony Abbott in Canberra on Tuesday Dr Kikwete invited Australian resource companies to Tanzania

"We invite companies to develop the LNG, make use of the natural gas to produce other products," the president said at the opening of the talks.

In Newcastle he invited researchers and teaching staff to collaborate with Tanzania, which has been its own nation since 1964.

''I use this opportunity to encourage this university and other Australian universities to consider more collaboration with universities in Africa, especially Tanzania, to build the capacity for teaching and research and the development of our countries.''
