Rwanda's milk overtakes coffee in export revenue

Mar 22,2014

KIGALI, March 22 (Xinhua) -- Rwanda earned more from milk exports than
coffee and minerals last year, according to the 2013 external trade
report by the National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda.

The report released on Friday shows that for the period October-
December 2013, milk and its products fetched 22.41 million U.S.
dollars, earning more revenue than any of the country's exports.

Minerals including niobium, vanadium ores, tantalum and concentrates
were the second highest earners after fetching 21.59 million dollars.

The increased milk exports from the East African country have been
attributed to the government's cattle stocking program locally called
Girinka.

Coffee, Rwanda's traditionally biggest revenue source, came in third position.

In 2012, exports of coffee ranked first with 25.48 million dollars.

Efforts have been made to improve dairy farming, including opening up
milk collection centers in districts installed with cooling equipment.

Rwanda's milk production has reportedly increased by 11 percent over
the past two years, while coffee exports declined due to a drop in
coffee products generally.

The country's main exports during the fourth quarter of 2013 were
motor spirits, gasoline which fetched 6.25 million dollars.

Gas oil earned the country 6.02 million dollars followed by 5. 50
million dollars from jet fuel.

The statistics also show that more imports came from China,
registering 87.69 million dollars, followed by imports from Uganda of
52.59 million dollars.

Imports from India reached 39.28 million dollars. The country's main
imports were Portland cement and mobile cell phones worth 17. 68
million dollars and 14.53 million dollars respectively.
