Summer School Scholarships

SUISS Scholarships

SUISS gives a number of scholarships to applicants of the Text and Context modules, which offer some help with the course fee, but not with the the accommodation fee. To apply for a scholarship you have to include with your application a letter explaining why you wish to be considered. One of your referees has to support your scholarship application. Awards are made on the basis of genuine financial need, academic merit and the contribution which the candidate seems likely to make to the general life of the School. Please mention which scholarship you are applying for on the relevant part on page 4 of the application form.
British Council Scotland Commonwealth Scholarships
An addition to SUISS in 2014, the British Council Scotland Commonwealth Scholarships are supported by the generosity of British Council Scotland to celebrate the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Scotland. They are intended to enable gifted literature and creative writing students from Commonwealth countries to attend the school.

Saltire Scholarship for Scottish Literature

SUISS is hoping to be able to offer three Saltire scholarships again in 2014. These scholarships are for scholars from abroad, who either run courses in Scottish Literature, or who have permission from their departments to set up such a course, or doctoral candidates in the late stages of a PhD on an aspect of Scottish Literature. The scholarship covers the course and accommodation fee for the Scottish Literature course, as well as an additional study week for research.

David Daiches Scholarship

To mark the 60th Anniversary of the Summer School in 2007, SUISS introduced this scholarship to commemorate the life and vision of our founder Professor David Daiches.

The John McGrath Scholarship for Theatre Studies

This Scholarship was established by SUISS in 2002 to celebrate the life and work of John McGrath, playwright, theatre director, and good friend of the School for many years. The scholarship covers the fees for one or two modules of the literature course or for the Creative Writing course.

The Greek Scholarship

Due to a generous contribution from one of our sponsors, SUISS is happy to offer a Greek Scholarship in 2014. This scholarship was founded in 2012, due to the country's continued financial need, and is specifically intended to enable a Greek undergraduate or postgraduate student to attend the school.

The Middle Eastern Scholarship

Once more, due to a generous contribution from one of our sponsors SUISS is happy to announce that we will offer a Middle Eastern Scholarship in 2014. This scholarship was founded in 2013 and is specifically intended to enable a Middle Eastern undergraduate or postgraduate student to attend the school.

The Charles Wallace India Trust Scholarship

Funding from the Charles Wallace India Trust (CWIT) is available to graduate and postgraduate students from all over India. The trust offers two scholarships, both covering the course and accommodation fees (participants are expected to pay for their own travel expenses and spending money):
·         One scholarship for four weeks (two modules of the applicant's choice in July and/or August) will be offered to a literature student attending the Text and Context course.
·         One scholarship will be offered for the four-week Creative Writing course in July.
Please follow the guidelines for SUISS scholarships.
The British Council India is organising a series of Creative Writing courses, and students attending one of these courses are particularly invited to apply for the CWIT Creative Writing Scholarship. For more information see the website of the British Council India.

The Edwin Morgan Translation Fellowship

Supported by Creative Scotland, SUISS is hoping to once more be able to offer a free place on the six-week Text and Context course to professional translators with an interest in twentieth-century and contemporary Scottish writing.
