Rwanda: 37 former civil servants take government to court

By Robert Mugabe
Kigali, Rwanda-they are former employees of Rwanda Correctional Services (RCS), they say, they were fired illegally, and now want government of Rwanda to pay them more than Rwf 500 Millions as damages and allowances as a result of breach of Labour law.
The legal litigation involving 37 former RCS employees against the government was filed at Nyarugenge intermediate court (TGI) in September. Speaking to Great Lakes Voice, they say, they're confident that the court will rule in their favour.
The plaintiffs say they had approached the office of ombudsman for mediation but in vain, and they wrote to the Prime Minister also there was no intervention, after inviting the Ministry of Labour and Public service into the matter.
Justice Minister and attorney General had earlier announced that any government official who engage government into unfounded cases thus leading government to a slack, will be forced to pay the amount him/herself but not from tax payers cash.
The plaintiffs say if they succeed with their case, they will still go ahead to appeal to President Paul Kagame to fire those leaders who cause government's lose irresponsibly.
"We filed our cases in September, by the November 1, 2013 the hearing will take place. Though, we have filed our legal litigations separately. So the hearing will be at the various dates of this year," Alex Rutayisire said. Adding that after their success, "will appeal to Kagame to replace the 'irresponsible' management of RCS"
Among the 37 former employees, the least petitioner is applying for Rwf 7.5M and the expensive litigant is filing for Rwf 31M.
