Reports coming in that Joseph Kony has been killed, via @jgmariner and

On Tuesday, rumors began circulating online that Joseph Kony, the
African warlord leading the
Lord's Resistance Army for decades, had died. But these reports aren't
true. Their origin, it seems, is a "satirical" post in the
National Report from late last week.

The headline proclaims, "Joseph Kony Gunned Down by Seal Team 6, Obama
Takes Credit."

Here is a sample of the post

, which is obviously meant to prompt outrage from, presumably,
conservative readers who believe it's true:

One White House official, who agreed to speak with National Report on
the condition of anonymity had this to say: "The hunt for Kony that
began several years ago is now over. The recent expansion of boots on
the ground, as well an increase in drone capabilities, accelerated
the mission. President Obama gave the final orders to assassinate the
former LRM leader as issues with extradition and trials would be hard
to handle in the US. The President obviously considers this to be a
major accomplishment."

The National Report has made news a couple of other times for prank
reports like this. Last fall, the blog

"reported" that Dearborn, Michigan had voted to adopt Sharia law.
Although the post was fake, its content easily tricked a subset of
readers who already believed a conspiracy theory involving a Muslim
takeover of some American towns, including Dearborn. The town received
an onslaught of angry calls, and eventually had to deny the details of
the obviously false article.

So unless we're entering into a moment of fantastic coincidence, Kony
is still eluding his pursuers

. However, it appears that the National Report

article made its way into a couple of rumor mills before mutating into
actual news. The

Uganda People's Defence Forces commented on the rumors by saying that
they hadn't heard anything verifying the reports, but that "that would
be very good news for humanity." It was all enough for a BBC reporter
to check with his Ugandan government sources:

Just asked a very high level source in #Uganda if Joseph

#Kony had been killed by Seal Team6 as rumoured. His answer- "That's rubbish.."

— Alan Kasujja - BBC (@kasujja) May 6, 2014

To all Ugandan friends. Article claiming #Kony was killed by US seals
is from a satirical website. Not true.

In late April, the Ugandan military said it had captured one of the
LRA's leaders,

Charles Okello, in the Central African Republic. The military also
freed ten of the group's captives. Kony, however, remains very much on
the loose.

<National Report>According to sources at the Pentagon, Joseph Kony,
the former leader of the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA), has been gunned
down in a remote area of the South Sudan by members of Seal Team 6.
The LRM is a guerrilla group founded in Uganda then spread to other
areas within the region including Democratic Republic of Congo,
Central African Republic and South Sudan. In late March, President
Obama sent 150 special-operations personnel and four aircrafts to join
the pursuit of Kony.

One White House official, who agreed to speak with National Report on
the condition of anonymity had this to say: "The hunt for Kony that
began several years ago is now over. The recent expansion of boots on
the ground, as well an increase in drone capabilities, accelerated
the mission. President Obama gave the final orders to assassinate the
former LRA leader as issues with extradition and trials would be hard
to handle in the US. The President obviously considers this to be a
major accomplishment."

The carefully rehearsed operation struck about 1:20a.m. Friday local
time. About 40 troops, largely Navy SEALs, were involved. According
to Pentagon officials, photos of Kony's dead body do exist, but will
not be release to the public. Officials are expected to eventually
release a corpse photo, as has been done previously with famous
villains such as Che Guevara and Saddam Hussein, but that information
will remain classified in the short term.

Four other adult males, believed to be part of Kony's inner circle,
were also killed in the 45-minute raid as well as two females who the
Pentagon are considering "collateral damage".

Kony had been accused of ordering the abduction of children to become
sex slaves and child solders. The LRM amassed an estimated 66,000
children who roamed the region. In 2005, Kony was indicted for war
crimes and crimes against humanity by the International Criminal Court
in The Hague, Netherlands but has evaded capture since. Kony's army
has spent years plundering villages, mutilating civilians and
kidnapping children across a large swath of central Africa. Kony
gained attention in March 2012 when a 30-minute documentary titled
Kony 2012 was released by film maker Jason Russell for the campaign
group Invisible Children Inc.

Poor Africans!!!!

Lies lies lies…Who is more criminal than MUSEVENI and
KAGAME????????????Kagame who has killed more than 10 millions of
Rwandans+ Conolese people, remains the darling of Americans as the
best leader in AAfrica. MUSEVENI who killed hundreds of thousands of
Ugandans, Congolese remains the most cherished guy of AMERICANS.

I wish God burns this whole World so he recreates a new one.

Dear Imani I don't believe in distorting facts or propagating
untruths. You cannot compare Kagame or Museveni to Kony by any
standards. Spare your lies for those who don't know.

And of course, you, dear Chris, would know better than Imani. There is
a specific narrative about Africa that the western media continues to
propagate with impunity. You chose to further propagate this narrative
that suits your agenda. You will continue to do this. But please, do
not delegitimse the real life experiences of Africans who have for
decades had to live with the hypocrisy of successive US
administrations, as pointed out by Imani.

Hi Peace,

thatz alittle harsh; God reserved the right to judge….

I don't endorse M, K or K…. even one death is wrong if they could have
prevented it….

u r one of us Africans & we r a gifted people; we can't lay our
destiny on the west; we r not their priority! wat we lack in political
maturity we can't keep finger pointing the acrocities of slavery &
unfair global market…. our leadership need to step up to their
responsibilities and accountabilities. lets all make a difference one
by one…invest in African instead of western capitals… we r in it
together. America has its priorities and only engages in what is best
for it; we do da same; like the saying goes "Rome wasn't built in a
day". It is possible…

cheers, A.B

This is bull shit. Kony does not exist. It's all about corruption and
making Africa look like shit to collect more funds and grants the
winner takes it all. NGOs making profits at the expense of the poor.
If museveni cares at all, he should retire from his 27 yr reign. He
should develop rural areas and construct school structures. Pupils
still study under trees. It's all ducked up

Kadoodi-it is not Museveni claiming that he killed Kony-as to whether
Kony does not exist or existed and committed atrocities, you do not
have to tell lies and blame Museveni. Go and ask those Kony terrorised
in the Districts of Amuru,Gulu,Pader,Amuria and even Adjumani. You may
wish to save yourself from the encounter with those people if yours is
to lie that Kony did not exist.
