Subject: *DHR* Tanzania and Rwanda hold talks on refugees
UGO - nbs.ug, 9th, September 2013
Officials from the Republic of Tanzania and the Republic of Rwanda will this week meet to settle the ongoing differences between the two countries caused by the recent expulsion of Rwandans from Tanzania.
Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, the Minister of State for East African Affairs, Hon Shem Bageine revealed that leaders from Tanzania and Rwanda will meet at the border of the two countries and settle their differences amicably.
"Tanzania and Rwanda will meet in the course of this week at the border around River Kagera area and go through the people that have been affected in this shift," said Bageine.
"They will search and see who was legally living in Tanzania to be resettled back and those who intruded will remain in their respective partner states," he added.
Hon Bageine also revealed that those whose property was damaged will be compensated by the Tanzania government.
Thousands of Rwandans who have been staying in Tanzania for almost all their lives were last month forced to flee the country after Tanzania's President Jakaya Kikwete ordered the expulsion of illegal immigrants following the tension with the Rwandan government over Democratic Republic of Congo.
The tension between the two countries started when Tanzania decided to send troops to Democratic Republic of Congo as part of the UN force seeking to weaken the M23 rebels. Meanwhile, also Tanzania accuses Rwanda to be allegedly supporting the M23 rebels although the Rwandan government denies it.
